No waiting at school run times is proposed by Peartree Way Nursery and Greenside School after reports of dangerous parking. Objections close 13 November.

New parking restrictions are proposed on Peartree Way and Shephall Green, two Shephall roads with schools on them, to stop dangerous parking at drop-off and pick-up times. Stevenage Borough Council published the proposal on Thursday 22 October. Objections and comments can be sent until 13 November 2026.

The council says Peartree Way Nursery School and Greenside School reported problems at the busiest times of the school day. Both raised concerns about pupils’ safety because of “dangerous and obstructive parking”. The council’s own site checks found that unrestricted parking at the spots in the order “is liable to cause an obstruction to traffic and may pose a threat to pedestrians”.

What would change

The draft order sets three kinds of restriction, on six short lengths of kerb:

Road Where Restriction
Peartree Way, west side 10m north from the boundary of Nos 64 and 66 No waiting at any time
Peartree Way, west side 3m, starting 36m north of No 64 No waiting at any time
Peartree Way, east side 54m north-east from No 81 No waiting 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday
Shephall Green, west side 13m, starting 31m north-west of a point opposite No 32 No waiting at any time
Shephall Green, west side 3m north-west from a point opposite No 32 No waiting at any time
Shephall Green, east side 50m north-west from No 32 No waiting 8.45am to 9.45am and 2.45pm to 3.45pm, Monday to Friday

That is 29m of no waiting at any time, plus 104m restricted on weekdays only. The council has published a plan for each road alongside the order.

One detail for anyone reading the documents: the heading of the order’s third schedule prints the Shephall Green morning window as “08.45am to 9.45pm”. The order’s own wording, in Article 3, says 8.45am to 9.45am.

Who would still be allowed to stop

The usual exemptions apply. Under the draft order a driver may still stop:

  • to let a passenger get in or out, with their luggage
  • to load or unload goods for an address next to the restriction
  • with a blue badge and a parking disc, for up to three hours, with no return within an hour

Emergency vehicles, Royal Mail vans on a round and drivers told to stop by the police are also exempt. (draft order)

What it means for you

  • If you do the school run to either school, you would need to park further away and walk the last stretch, or use the set-down exemption to drop off without waiting.
  • If you live on either road, the any-time restrictions are short lengths, but the 54m on Peartree Way would be off limits for most of the weekday.
  • To object or support it, write to Stevenage Borough Council at Daneshill House, Danestrete, Stevenage SG1 1HN, or email tro@stevenage.gov.uk, before 13 November 2026. An objection must give its grounds and your full name and address. Comments in support are also accepted.
  • To read the plans, the order, the plans and the statement of reasons are on the council’s proposed traffic orders page, or at Daneshill House during opening hours.

The council will consider responses before deciding whether to make the order. It does not yet give a start date. For the rest of this autumn’s road and parking changes, see our Stevenage roadworks and travel page and our guide to parking in Stevenage.
