The town centre Post Office inside TG Jones at 95 Queensway closes on Monday 4 January 2027. The nearest alternative named is Roaring Meg, 0.9 miles away.

Stevenage’s town centre Post Office will close on Monday 4 January 2027. The branch is inside the TG Jones shop at 95 Queensway. The Post Office confirmed the date in a letter to customers published on Friday 23 October.

The closure follows a restructuring announced by TG Jones, the Post Office’s retail partner in the shop. The Post Office says it is “in the early stages of reviewing applications to run the Post Office branch” and will give an update “as soon as possible”. That is in its information letter for the branch, branch number 169129.

The second Stevenage closure this year

It is the second full Post Office in the town to close in 2026. The branch inside the Morrisons Daily store at 17 to 19 The Oval closed on Thursday 6 August, two days before the shop itself, according to the Post Office’s letter about The Oval branch. That letter said the Post Office was looking at ways to reinstate a service, which might include advertising the vacancy. Its consultation hub lists no replacement for The Oval so far.

Where to go instead

The letter for Queensway names two alternative branches:

Branch Distance Opening hours Not available there
Roaring Meg Post Office, inside Hobbycraft, Unit 7, Roaring Meg Retail Park, SG1 1XN about 0.9 miles Mon to Fri 9am to 8pm, Sat 9am to 6pm, Sun 10am to 4pm the full range of travel money, Passport Check and Send, vehicle tax, on-demand travel insurance
Knebworth Post Office, St Martins Road, Knebworth, SG3 6EP about 3 miles Mon to Fri 9am to 6pm, Sat 9am to 1.30pm, closed Sunday Passport Check and Send

The Post Office says Roaring Meg has wide automatic doors, level access and disabled parking nearby. Knebworth, a village about three miles south of the town centre, has a step at the entrance and time-restricted parking.

Both branches lack services the Queensway counter offers. Roaring Meg does not do the full range of travel money, Passport Check and Send, vehicle tax or on-demand travel insurance. Knebworth does not do Passport Check and Send.

The Post Office has also opened smaller “Drop and Collect” counters around Stevenage in recent years, which it describes as a lighter format. Its consultation hub records them at The Glebe (Simply Local, SG2 0DL), Mobbsbury Way (Best One, SG2 0HY), Albert Street (Ask Stores, SG1 3NY) and Newton Road (Newton General Store, SG2 0BX). Check the Post Office branch finder for what each one handles before you travel.

What it means for you

  • Nothing changes until 4 January. The Queensway counter keeps trading until then.
  • Passports and vehicle tax: neither named alternative offers Passport Check and Send, and Roaring Meg does not do vehicle tax. If you need either in the new year, use the branch finder to find the nearest counter that does, or go to Queensway before 4 January.
  • Christmas post: the closure falls after the Christmas and New Year rush, so December parcels and cards can still go from Queensway.
  • Getting to Roaring Meg: the Post Office says it is about 0.9 miles from Queensway, with parking nearby and local buses serving the area. Our parking page covers the town centre car parks if you are combining trips.

How to have your say

The Post Office invites questions and comments on the closure through its National Consultation Team:

Comments are not kept confidential unless you mark them “In Confidence”, the letter says. The Post Office has said it will write again once it has news about a replacement service. We will update this story when it does.
